Here is a poem I once wrote and I often share with others who lose their dogs to death. There are several versions of it, actually, and neither stands good enough to make me discard the others. This is the one I feel is the best today.
Condolences: The Day the Dog Dies
The saddest day is the day a dog dies.
How deeply his absence darkens the room
He can no longer be seen!
May his spirit comfort you in the night
When you recall the time shared together
For they are all you have now – he’s gone!
May your happy memories comfort you in time
And his accomplishments make you proud
Surely they will bring you joy.
When you look up to the heavens
May you see his outline in the stars ~ Oh wandering spirit ~
On your heavenly course…
