I loved my friend
He went away from me.
There’s nothing more to say.
The poem ends.
Soft as it began, —–
I loved my friend.
This is such a lovely and touching poem. Interestingly, I learned the circumstances under which it was written. Grief stricken over the death of her young son, Wynona Moore Lipman, the first Black woman to be elected to the NJ Senate, turned to her friend, the poet, Langston Hughes, to write a poem for him. This is the poem he wrote, so full of delicacy and sensitivity.
